Landbrot Bakery and Bar    137 7th Ave South

So this place just opened up and has a very cool inviting vibe. This German style bakery has everything you need; cold beer (bier) on tap, ham and cheese croissants, sausages, and pretzels. They also have a full dinner menu.

landbrot pretzThe sesame pretzel was awesome, and the 3 kinds of mustard they give you, rocks. One spicy, one regular, and one honey mustard.

The food and bakery nick nacks are great, but the service was a little off, and it seems like they have to tighten up a bit.  All in all, best pretzel in the West Village.

date spot, eccentric, Harold Dieterle, Trendy, west village

I’ve been hearing about this place for a while, and was recently taken on a romantic birthday date with my girlfriend. For some reason I always thought this place was straight up Italian…

It’s actually Funky American with some great eccentric dishes. The menu is very courageous, with dishes like Spicy Duck Meatballs with mint cavatelli, and a quail egg. Wild.

The chef/owner is Top chef winner Harold Dieterle and these dishes prove his creativity. He also owns KinShop which is a modern Thai restaurant…also eclectic and awesome.

We started off with the House Made Garganelli with lobster mushrooms, black pepper, parmesan & lemon mushrooms. This had such a clean, sharp taste. It was fresh and sweet.

The Roasted Golden Snapper with fried yucca, chayote, olive tapenade was out of this world. Among the best fish I’ve had.

The Fricassee of Chicken and Egg chanterelles, with leeks, chicken liver, and truffle pudding stole the show. This dish had a hint of Korean cooking mixed with Modern American cuisine; and the egg yolk is a great idea.

The dishes we ordered had Italian, Korean, and American flair. Basically, there are no rules here except fresh, organic, tasty food. A must try.

The novelty with Sandy…

Bell Book & Candle, Electricity, restaurant, Sandy, Vin Sur Vingt, west village, wine

Look, it sucks not having electricity. Like everyone in The West Village, I have been without power since Monday 7:30pm.

Being ridiculously bored, we decided to roam the streets to check out the damage. Honestly, it was scary, but all the corner stores were open, under candle light of course, and trees were ripped out everywhere.

We sought shelter At the wine bar Vin Sur Vingt on West 11th, and those guys are awesome. Sebastian, the owner, was super friendly and everyone was in good spirits, making the best of the situation. Free food was given, free drinks as well, all were happy.

Tuesday night we did the same and roamed over to Bell Book & Candle…Mick, the owner is the best. He makes everyone feel at home here, ALL THE TIME. One of my favorite West Village Spots. Cell phone batteries were low or non-existent, but good old-fashioned conversation was back.

The lack of electricity is losing its novelty, but we keep moving forward maintaining positivity and hope, for the best city in the world.

Please send in pics you guys have taken over the past few days, and let me know where everyone ate and drank. I’m told the power will be back by Monday, but check out my twitter for live updates @westvillagefood.com

Boy is this place fun, once you get a table. This little Mexican restaurant is jammed packed with people waiting for tables. The margaritas are strong strong strong. It was 8 of us and I think we had 4 or 5 pitchers of deliciousness.

The atmosphere is that of a buzzing, authentic Mexican restaurant with cool artifacts and pictures and trinkets all over the place. The music is loud, I think there was even a dj or mc. At this place, it’s about more than the food; it’s about the fun. It was Ian’s girlfriend Ally’s birthday, as well as a few others in the restaurant, so they had a chugging contest, and then rounds of shots afterwords. Like I said, this place is fun.

The tacos, chips, and enchiladas were all good, and we were stuffed. Needless to say, we did not make it out after our dinner/binge drinking. Cant wait to go back.

Ian Says…”Tortilla Flats is one of the most “talked about” mexican spots in the city. I’ve heard people mention it a million times but never could get a reservation and didn’t want to deal with the put your name down and wait an hour type deal. Now that I’ve bit the bullet and got in, i can say its 100% worth it. It’s just fun from the second you grab a drink at the bar waiting for your table.

It’s rare that a cool spot in the West Village makes you feel like you’re in college again (in a good way). The place is known for the party vibe so everyone there is in big groups and often celebrating something so there’s just a happy feeling all around. And the manager/MC of the evening gets everyone involved in the fun so beware you shy folks.

The pitchers of Margaritas are the move (and super cheap!) so the food will be amazing by the time eat since you should be wasted.

Have fun everyone and make sure you mention you heard about them from WestVillageFood.com for a free shot (talk to Wade for that pictured here below with us  😉
